6-30-07 // B.C. Bike Race Course Preview

By Kipler - June 29, 2007 - 23:17

Race Preview: B.C. Bike Race-The Pacific TraverseFor participants in the inaugural edition of the B.C. Bike Race-The Pacific Traverse, a seven-day mountain-bike stage race from Victoria to British Columbia, it’s best not to dwell on the stats.

With the race set to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday morning in the town of Sooke, just outside of Victoria, there’s no need to over-think the 510 kilometers of classic B.C. terrain that lies ahead. Mulling over that 8000-foot climbing day later in the week would just be jumping the gun. Just how many hours will it take to complete the first stage, a 112-kilometer ride that features a 1,500-foot climb just 12 miles into this marathon week? The answers will come soon enough.

Over the last few weeks, details about the July 1-7 B.C. Bike Race have trickled out, and the 250 or so entrants are either licking their chops or turning in their sleep.

The B.C. Bike Race is the creation of Dean Payne, an experienced organizer of adventure races in British Columbia. To plot out the course, a clockwise circuit that begins on Canada Day near Vancouver and concludes with a final-day time trial at Whistler on July 7, Payne turned to three-time TransRockies champion Andreas Hestler.

6-29-07 // Sneak Peek: Kona’s new Magic Link

By Lesser - June 29, 2007 - 13:23

Just when you though maybe you were starting to understand this whole full suspension thing, Kona goes and throws us this curveball.

Kona’s Magic Link
Giving new meaning to “CoilAir,” the new Magic Link design from Kona uses a coil-sprung pivot , similar to a piston engine’s valve spring, to manipulate the lower shock hock mount—in this case, an Fox Shox air spring.

Check out this site, it will blow your mind.

Kona promises to have a few other tricks up its sleeve for ’08. Look for a full suspension 29er, a Stinky Air and more.

6-27-07 // Ninja Warrior Challenge!

By Webitor - June 27, 2007 - 11:15

NinjaNot since such televised masterpieces as MST3K and MXC has there been such an amazing TV show as the Ninja Warrior Challenge. In fact I’d bet somebody else’s first born that those Dancing With The Stars pansies can’t last ten seconds in the Ninja Warrior obstacle course. This is the veritable pinnacle of televised athleticism. I even heard a rumor that NWC was going to bump ballroom dancing out of the 2008 Olympics except for the whole Manchurian invasion back in 1931—which was led reportedly by, you guessed it—ninjas!

Why am I writing about NWC on the Bikemag.com blog you ask? Well because I can and also because you too can be a ninja warrior! That’s right folks get ready to send in video tapes of you tip toeing across stacks of tea cups, riding your bike across the ceiling and catching flies with chopsticks. The folks at www.g4tv.com want to see you dancing across rooftops ala Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

Starting July 2 and ending July 29, hopeful competitors over the age of 21 can upload video of themselves demonstrating their superior athletic prowess at the Ninja Warrior website. From those submissions, G4 will select 10 semi-finalists. Once the semi-finalists have been revealed, viewers can vote for their favorite competitor to determine the three finalists who will appear on G4’s live, daily series “Attack of the Show.” The winner will then be selected by G4 following the contestants’ “Attack of the Show” performance. Hopefuls should upload video of themselves demonstrating all the necessary Ninja Warrior attributes, including strength, speed, agility, flexibility, stamina and the passion to compete among some of the finest athletes in the world.

6-24-07 // Waterloo West

By Lesser - June 24, 2007 - 22:13

Greetings from Sun Valley, Idaho, where Trek and Gary Fisher are doling out test rides of the latest and greatest bikes for the coming year. Look for a complete report on the front page of bikemag.com in the next day or two.

Rolling deep with Trek Travel

Trek Travel, the global tour guiding outfit, was on hand to help an assembled crowd of international media wankers get their bikes set up. These guys have pretty stinking cool jobs, and did a great job taking care of riders and their bikes—everything from chainlube, Powerbars and sunscreen before the ride to ice cold beers afterwards.

6-22-07 // Late to the party…

By Lesser - June 22, 2007 - 01:37

If you’re a hard core bike blogging type, you’ve likely already seen this. I’m not, and haven’t, but here it is.

Maybe you’ve heard of the flicking-off-hummers phenomenon? Particularly of the H2/exceedingly-useless ilk?

Well if you approve, check out this entry to General Motor’s “make your own commercial” promotional contest. It’s a montage of many, many flicked off H2s. Beautiful. Courtesy of GoClipless.
