dave-crash-collins-dOn a weekend when mountain bikers were to be celebrating our sport at the Dam Cold Downhill race in Bootleg Canyon, Nevada, many will instead be attending a memorial service for that race’s spirited organizer.

Dave “Crash” Collins, who had devoted much of his energy to promoting races on Bootleg Canyon’s downhill trails, passed on January 8 following an intense battle with cancer. His passing came just 10 days short of his 48th birthday.

Mere weeks before being diagnosed with terminal cancer in late November 2009, Collins had announced his ambitious plans for the Dam Cold Downhill, a new pro-am that promised a $20,000 prize purse. The race, which was scheduled for January 16-17, was designed to give local racers a rare opportunity to compete against some of the world’s fastest pros.

The 2009 North Face Costa Rica Trophy Bike race drew 68 riders of varying levels—including French cross-country luminary Miguel Martinez—all eager to sample the country’s singletrack while soaking up the incredibly diverse scenery.

The three-day race took riders through a variety of ecosystems, from lush tropical jungles to steep volcanic mountains, starting from the Arenal Volcano and ultimately ending up in Monteverde, the capital of Costa Rica’s gold coast. The stages ranged in distance from 25 to 35 miles each and offered everything from buff singletrack to steep fireroad climbs, all punctuated by swift river crossings.

cr2“The landscapes traversed are really beautiful, wild and varied,” said Martinez, the XC gold medalist of the 2000 Olympic Games, who finished fourth in the Costa Rica race. “This country is great for those who can enjoy these special moments in which they find themselves in postcard landscapes.”

The fabled La Ruta de los Conquistadores, commonly cited as “the world’s toughest mountain bike race,” is once again proving its mettle, this time bouncing back from near financial devastation earlier this year to continue with November’s race on schedule, organizers say.

The race, which traverses Costa Rica from the Pacific coast to the beaches of its Caribbean shore–following a relentless route through the country’s central highlands in a four-day suffer-fest–will be held as planned from November 11-14, even though it was on the brink of financial ruin just months ago.
