Every skinny, awkwardly tanned bike geek out there probably harbors some vestige of resentment towards the football heroes of high school yesteryears. Yet if current Northern California trends continue, the reign of the pigskin jock might finally be coming to a close.
For proof, go visit Sir Frances Drake High School, where over sixty bike-wielding teenagers have officially overtaken the school football team in sheer numbers. It seems they’re only the beginning.
According to National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) board president, Gary Boulanger, there could be over 600 participants in the opening Norcal High School League Series this Sunday. That means a lot of dirty, tired, kids and a probable 1300 cheering parents descending upon the Monterey area.
Last year’s biggest race topped off at 480 participants. Boulanger credits the incredible growth with parent involvement and improved coaching. Though it could also be that 600 kids (and probably many more) just somehow don’t want to play football.
NICA has also created some impressive events to help fuel the emerging high school mountain biking phenomenon. For example, the Dirtbowl ride and fundraiser, held on Super bowl Sunday this year, included fun riding for all and boasted such names as Weins, Overend, and Fisher (Gary, that is.) That day 43 riders chose chamois over chili and raised over 10,000 dollars for the program.
So if you too are sensing the rise of a new kind of school hero, come out and support this season’s first race. The event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 7th, at 10AM in East Garrison at Ford Ord (near Monterey.) Registration will be open at 8AM the day of, and can be completed online at http://www.norcalmtb.org/index.php. Online registration ends February 26th, and late fees will apply. The course itself should show off some great singletrack in each (roughly) 5mi lap. There is no on-site camping available, but you can still pitch a tent at Marina Beach. If beds are your thing there are also plenty of lodges nearby. The event will be catered by Fork Catering, which boasts simple, healthy, delicious meals, so it is not likely that you will starve. For more information, check out the event at http://www.norcalmtb.org

Whether you know her for her blazing fast times, blazing fast husband, or habit of sporting costume wigs with teammate Willow Koerber, you do know Heather Irmiger. Fresh off an especially impressive season in ’09, the Boulder, Colorado native and Subaru-Gary Fisher rider is fast becoming one of the most prominent women on today’s mountain bike scene. She deserves every last palmarè; back-to-back marathon and cross country national championships, an impressive world cup showing, and a win at the ever-prestigious singlespeed world championships make it clear Irmiger is hitting her stride. Now she’s even got a tattoo to prove it.
We pestered Heather a little during this snowy offseason to find out what it’s like to be so freakin’ rad;

I hear you have an official lifetime ban on stationary exercise- what do you do when it snows?
In the early part of the season, I’ll occasionally run or do a hard hike. About 3 years ago I discovered backcountry skiing. I’ve completely fallen in love with this activity since it’s a lot like mountain biking - you climb a mountain and enjoy the sweet descent. We have some great locations near Boulder - the workout is incredible, the scenery is great. With a solid winter activity like this, I’ve been able to ban the trainer - why go nowhere fast, or freeze on a snowy day when I can work on my fitness and explore in the mountains?

What is your ideal breakfast?
I eat the same thing almost every morning - my ideal breakfast is so good! I start with a spinach/chanterelle mushroom/basil pesto egg scramble. Course two is a home-made gluten free pastry (lately, I’ve been making maple pecan scones). All this paired with a cappuccino whipped up by my live-in barista, JHK. [Jeremy Horgan Kobelski]

The Giant Grows: Adam Craig Leads New Rabobank-Giant Squad

Giant’s mountain bike team sponsorship is growing considerably this year. The company will now support two mountain bike teams—Rabobank-Giant and the Giant Factory Team. Each team will bring together some of cycling’s brightest stars in disciplines ranging from cyclocross to slopestyle.

Team Rabobank-Giant will include the likes of Adam Craig along with new talents Emil Lindren of Sweden, Fabian Giger of Switzerland and Henk Jaap Moorlag of the Netherlands. This group of riders will focus on a year-round, global calendar featuring cross-country races in the summer and cyclocross races in the winter.

Craig commented on the new team, “From an athlete’s standpoint, it’s the ideal setup. There are certain similarities between cross-country mountain biking and cyclocross, and there’s always some athlete crossover between the two disciplines. So structuring it under one team makes sense.”

Long Term Test: Kona Hei Hei 2-9

By Mazzman - February 5, 2010 - 17:37

By Vernon Felton

Sometime ago, I took possession of Kona’s cross-country, full-suspension 29er, the Hei Hei 2-9. Since then, I’ve ridden the bike through every season and in every possible condition. For 2010, the evolution of this model gets a bit more interesting, but we’ll tackle that later in this review. For now, a long-term review of the existing bike is in order.

Beyond the occasional 3- or 4-month stint aboard a test bike, I haven’t spent too much time riding 29ers. But there are some constantly rolling, root-strewn, low-lying trails in my neck of the woods and on these trails many longer-travel bikes tend to wallow about annoyingly. Pat White, product manager at Kona, suggested the Hei Hei 2-9 as a solution.

Cane Creek Launches Headset Fit Finder

By LaBabarbarian - February 5, 2010 - 15:24

Cane Creek is making the convoluted world of headset standards a lot less overwhelming. The company recently launched a new online Headset Fit Finder—headsetfitfinder.com. The site is intended to simplify the process of finding the correct headset size combinations for a particular bike. With more 20 different tapered and conversion headset configurations out there, compounded by the confusion of integrated vs. semi-integrated standards, the Headset Fit Finder should prove useful for even the average gearhead.

To use the fit finder, simply enter a bike’s make, model and year. The database will either show the bike’s headset options immediately, or take users through a series of  steps to find a fit for their particular frame/fork configuration.

Trek, Specialized, KHS, Niner, LaPierre and Salsa have already contributed years of headset information to the database, and details on about 100 bikes are added each day.
