Ash Smith has never been much of a fan of big, elaborately staged, mass attendance mountain bike races. Instead, as the owner of trailAddiction, a mountain bike guiding company based out of Les Arcs, France, Smith makes a living taking small groups of riders into the Alps, showing them the kind of riding experience that he is a fan of—epic all-day adventures across stunning terrain, following singletrack as much as possible.

“I don’t have any experience organizing mountain biking events…. I haven’t even participated many, either,” says Smith. But that didn’t stop him from dreaming up a seven-day, point-to-point stage race across the Maritime Alps the likes of which hasn’t quite been done before. In total, says Smith, the Trans-Provence boasts more singletrack descending than any other seven-day race in existence.

Whistler Creekside was thriving with energy as the seventh and final stage of the BC Bike Race rolled into town.

BC Bike Race Stage 6 Squamish

By Webitor - July 4, 2009 - 10:33

Squamish is known as the recreation capital of Canada and on Friday more than 400 BC Bike Race competitors discovered why mountain biking falls under that umbrella.

Despite a network of incredible singletrack, racers didn’t linger on the trails long. The first Men’s Open category team, current race leaders Jamis/Santa Cruz, finished in just 2:44:03, with an overall time gap of close to 8 minutes over second place team, Kona (Barry Wicks and Kris Sneddon), who finished the stage in 2:50:50 to secure second spot in the overall GC. South Africans DCM Chrome 1, who finished in 2:52:15 are keeping third place in hand.

BC Bike Race Stage 5 Sechelt

By Webitor - July 3, 2009 - 10:29

Thursday’s BC Bike Race route, the second one on the Sunshine Coast, was much anticipated by both BCBR staff and return riders simply because its notorious Hwy 102 trail brings riders to a slick and swoopy mountain bike nirvana. Not a bad way to wrap up a solid day of mountain biking.

Beneath endless bluebird skies, the almost 370 BCBR participants queued up for the start of their Sunshine Coast adventure—their fifth consecutive day of mountain biking in southwestern BC. During Stage 4 on Wednesday, many riders were cursing Course Designer Rod Camposano because of the relentless climbing he threw at them. However, by dinner-time, the conversation had turned to how much riders loved the trails.
