Chris Kovarik started the 2010 season off with a bang, winning the Australian National Championships for the first time since his string of victories there between 2000 to 2002.

Pre-race favorite Sam Hill had set the fastest time in the qualifying round, and was the last rider out of the start gate. Hill appeared ready to claim the title, but crashed just yards before the finish line. Hill was unharmed by the fall and managed to get back up and cross the finish line in fifth place. Sam Blenkinsop was also injured during the race.

Anthill Films Blog: Random Thoughts - Vanderham and Hill on the Shore

By anthill - January 7, 2010 - 11:00

The Spring 2010 feature film “Follow Me” from Anthill Films takes a look at the on trail experiences that the riders in the film have with each other. All of the riders in ‘Follow Me’ know one another and in many cases they have known on another for quite some time. “Follow Me” takes the relationships of the riders and formats the film around exploring the idea of sharing the ride. More specifically, stoking the ride. Here’s a few random thoughts from a recent shoot with Thomas Vanderham and Sam Hill on the the North Shore.

‘Follow Me’: North Shore Segment, Sam Hill and Thomas Vanderham November 2009

I grew up in West Vancouver and moved to Whistler in 1997. It was a great experience growing up on the North Shore during that time as it gained international attention in the mountain bike world. I helped my youngest brother and his friends build a trail called Roach Hit on Cypress Mountain. It was not one of the first trails on the mountainside but it is known as a classic today. Roach Hit was an effort to combine shore style stunts with sections of downhill racing flow an effort to add speed to the classic North Shore style of trail building. Roach Hit still exists; the sign and the stunts have long been destroyed but the line remains. I watched as Wade Simmons went from being a bike mechanic in Deep Cove, known as one of the best riders on the Shore by reputation alone, to becoming the godfather of free ride mountain biking. I was there for Thomas Vanderham’s first days filming for Cranked 3 on Cypress, on a bike he had purchased off of Andrew Shandro (also a North Shore legend). I’ve been lucky enough to have had a few first hand experiences in the history of the North Shore and now I feel like we’re creating a new piece to the story with Sam and Thomas’ North Shore segment for ‘Follow Me’.

Following the success of the two previous St. Patty’s Day Feast races at Bootleg Canyon in Boulder City, Nevada, the organizer is upping the ante with a new pro-am race in January that is promising a $20,000 prize purse.

The new race, the “Dam Cold Downhill,” is designed to give local pro racers and amateurs a rare opportunity to race against some of the world’s fastest professionals. Many top pros spend much of the winter in southern California to train in the temperate weather, and several have verbally committed to race in the inaugural event, which is scheduled for January 16-17, 2010. Among those expected to participate are the likes of Sam Hill, Cedric Gracia and brothers Gee and Dan Atherton.

“Gee and Dan [Atherton] have told me if there’s a $20,000 prize purse then they will definitely show up to race,” said organizer David “Crash” Collins, a former pro downhiller who has organized the previous St. Patty’s Day Feast races at Bootleg Canyon. “Being a pro-am, it will give amateurs the opportunity to be on the same course with the pros and compare their times with the likes of Sam Hill.

By GaryPerkin - September 21, 2009 - 14:13

The 2009 World Cup is in the bag!

Mountain bike Champions crowned in the high mountains of Schladming in the heart of the Austrian Alps.

In just a few short years Schladming has become the place of legend in the mountain bike scene - super steep, rooty, technical and whole bunch of similar superlatives.

The downhill course is where most of these terms apply to best, but the XC has its place here too .. and it was here that the UCI World Cup finals took place to conclude the 2009 race season.
