Two days after Christmas, a fire raged through Mark Weir’s home. In roughly half an hour, the fire engulfed Weir’s house, destroying the structure along with his cars, motorcycles, seven complete bikes, countless bike parts and just about everything else. “Two of my [Santa Cruz] Driver 8s were melted together into one chunk of aluminum,” Weir said.

Weir, his wife and his son, who were home when the fire started, were able to escape the blaze. Though a cause has yet to be determined, Weir is trying to remain positive about the tragedy. “I’ve got my boy and my wife, so that’s a good step in the right direction,” he said.

The Rider: Steve Smith, better known as Stevil Kinevil, began work in the bike business in 1995. Throughout the years, he has worked as a messenger, wrenched in shops, toured the World Cup circuit as a support person, was assembly manager at Santa Cruz Bicycles, drank a claimed 15,666 beers and became the infamous black-block-censored face of Swobo’s “How To Avoid The Bummer Life” blog. Smith’s three-year stint at Swobo recently ended, and he started his own blog—allhailtheblackmarket.com. The topics of Smith’s blog not only plunge deep into the dark muck of cycling’s counterculture, but also cover everything from mustaches to the human condition.

"After seven years of riding these trails there are sections that I've only been able to clean once or twice. The size of the park makes it easy to underestimate how technical some of the spots are."

Topeak’s new $150 Air BackPack uses a unique bladder system for structural support without the weight of a metal structure. Plus—the bag collapses to a near non-existent pouch when not in use. It also comes with a well through out gear caddy for keeping track of tools and tubes, a deployable helmet holder and rainfly, and 650-cubic inches of storage space. Air Jordan, eat your heart out.
