Giant’s mountain bike team sponsorship is growing considerably this year. The company will now support two mountain bike teams—Rabobank-Giant and the Giant Factory Team. Each team will bring together some of cycling’s brightest stars in disciplines ranging from cyclocross to slopestyle.

Team Rabobank-Giant will include the likes of Adam Craig along with new talents Emil Lindren of Sweden, Fabian Giger of Switzerland and Henk Jaap Moorlag of the Netherlands. This group of riders will focus on a year-round, global calendar featuring cross-country races in the summer and cyclocross races in the winter.

Craig commented on the new team, “From an athlete’s standpoint, it’s the ideal setup. There are certain similarities between cross-country mountain biking and cyclocross, and there’s always some athlete crossover between the two disciplines. So structuring it under one team makes sense.”

Avid Sponsors Ashland’s Chainless Challenge

By Screamin Mimi - June 30, 2009 - 14:12

Since 2006, the small college town of Ashland Oregon, set in the picturesque mountains of Southern Oregon, has been host to some of the best All-Mountain racing in the North America. With the huge success of events like the Downieville Classic, “All-Mountain” racing is taking-off and bringing with it a vibe not felt since the early days of mountain bike racing.

From the top of Mt. Ashland to the downtown area, the course reflects what the name implies, 12 miles of Super Downhill. This means mostly downhill with just enough climbing to cough-up a lung or two. Suited for a 5 to 6 inch “All-Mountain Weapon” the bike has to be light enough to slog up a 400 feet of climbing and tough enough to handle 10 plus miles of white knuckled downhill. Past contenders claim, “it’s a true test of rider and equipment”.

For the last three years All-Mountain legend Mark Weir has owned the event, posting a record time of 35 minutes 22 seconds. This year he’ll be defending his winning streak against veterans like Eric Carter (GT) local favorite Nathan Riddle (Fluidride), and a slew of first timers including: 2008 Downieville Classic winner Ross Schnell (TREK, crankbrothers, Oakley), 2000 Downhill World Champ Myles Rockwell (SRAM, Giant, Mavic), All-Ride honch and all around great guy Kirt Voreis (Santa Cruz Syndicate/All-Ride), and finding time between her hectic World Cup XC schedule Suburu Gary Fisher’s, Willow Koerber.

Escape Adventures’ Mountain Biking the Maze Tour named “Tour of a Lifetime”

By Screamin Mimi - June 30, 2009 - 12:49

LAS VEGAS, NV— Following an extensive survey of hundreds of tours offered by outfitters from all over the globe,
National Geographic Traveler magazine chose Escape Adventures’ Mountain Biking the Maze tour to highlight in
its 2009 Tours of a Lifetime feature. To celebrate, Escape is offering $50 off all remaining 2009 Maze tour dates,
for a limited time only.

The Maze is a guest and guide favorite, taking riders deep into one of the least accessible wilderness areas in the United States. A remote section of Canyonlands National Park, the Maze features a hypnotic labyrinth of cliffs and meandering canyons, not to mention some great slickrock bike riding.

Escape Adventures is the only outfitter with the equipment and expertise to guide guests deep into the Maze, providing the most thorough and rewarding Maze tour available. While primarily a mountain biking adventure, the tour also includes a challenging hike to “The Harvest Scene”, an incredible series of life-sized pictographs, as well as a scenic airplane ride back to Moab that allows guests to view from above the tricky terrain they just traversed on bike and foot.

Results: Maribor World Cup DH & 4X Race Results

By Screamin Mimi - June 22, 2009 - 17:39

The weather was a factor in the weekend’s racing, especially on Saturday, when the organizers and the UCI were forced to postpone the afternoon’s downhill qualifying rounds after the last hour of practice was held in the pouring rain, with thunder and lightning all around the hill. Some riders were happy with the postponement, while those who thrive in sloppy, technical conditions said they would rather have raced in the rain.

With the downhill postponed, the 4X races took to the fore on Saturday. After two days of bone-dry, scorching-hot practice and qualifying runs, the riders suddenly had to contend with a completely new course—after three to four hours of driving rain, it had become less BMX-ish and more like a mountain bike track, with wide-open, loose turns, exposed roots and new ruts forming with every run. The early rounds threw up some surprises, with major moves being attempted on the first and second turns, but, despite some scares, the major seeds all advanced through the heats.
